Hue to show off traditional craft in festival this month

The 2013 Hue Traditional Craft Festival will take place on the banks of the Huong (Perfume) River April 27 to May 1, a representative of the Thua Thien-Hue’s People Committee has said.
Co-organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with the local government of the central province, the festival is now in its fifth annual incarnation, news website Vietnamplus quoted Phan Trong Vinh, chairman of the committee, as saying on April 9.
Apart from introducing traditional cuisine and folk games from Hue, the five-day festival will see talented artisans, not only from Hue but from throughout Vietnam, gathering to present their own products and demonstrate the process of making those products to viewers.
These artisans come from traditional craft villages that specialize in pottery, embroidery, silk weaving, lacquer painting, porcelain enamel, conical hat making, wood carving, paper flower making, woodblock printing, and various cuisines.
An exhibition of handicraft pieces produced hundreds of years ago will also be part of the event.
A workshop -- “Craft Villages with Tourism Industry – Potentials and Bottlenecks” -- will be held at the event with the participation of prominent researchers, scientists and artisans.
The event aims to create a forum for tourists to learn more about local crafts as the prospects for development of craft villages in the historic capital city of Hue.
A new addition to the festival this year is a display entitled “Heritage on the Move”, a part of the Mestamorphoses exhibition from France, which will introduce five exceptional French textile techniques.
Through the festival, the province hopes to attract around 2.5 million of tourists coming this year, up 25 percent over last year.
