Vietnam airline offering flights to ‘coffee town’ for under $5

Vietnam low-cost carrier VietJetAir announced it will be offering discounted fares on its new domestic route between Ho Chi Minh City and Buon Ma Thuot Town in the Central Highlands.
VietJetAir will launch the 55 minute, 350-kilometer service to Buon Ma Thuot, considered the country’s coffee capital, on May 20. Tickets booked between 9 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. on April 24 for travel between the launch date and December 20 will cost customers VND100,000 (US$4.5), not including taxes.
The airline announced the new route early this month, quoting fares starting from as low as VND390,000 ($19). One roundtrip per day will depart from Ho Chi Minh City at 6:30 p.m.
VietJetAir will open its official sales outlet in Buon Ma Thuot on April 24, giving the first 20 customers an opportunity to purchase tickets for the pretax price of VND100,000 each; the first 100 customers will receive a free VietJetAir shirt.
Passengers traveling during the first week of the new route will be treated to in-flight entertainment including dancing by Central Highland artists, the airline said in a press release, calling Buon Ma Thuot Town “the heart of Vietnam’s Central Highlands.”
VietJetAir entered the local aviation market in December 2011 and now operates about 300 flights a week to and from nine local destinations including Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Lat, Da Nang, Phu Quoc, Hue, Nha Trang, Vinh and Hai Phong.
The airline launched its first international route, between Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok, on February 10, with tickets costing just $10 through the end of 2013. It has announced it will be giving away free tickets for the Hanoi-Bangkok route, slated to start this June.
